Q&A with Mike Smith, Jr.
What are the things you are looking for in a potential school?
I am looking for strong academics, great coaches, and I want to feel like I am part of the family. I’m also taking into consideration the different degree programs, location, and facilities.
What are some of your favorites?
I love Cinnamon Toast Crunch, wings and burgers. For entertainment it’s Star Wars, Marvel, Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, and Rap, R&B, and Gospel. And I cheer for the Michigan Wolverines, the Chicago Cubs, Bulls, and Bears as well as the NY Giants (so long as they have OBJ).
What are some of your greatest accomplishment in sports?
Receiving the 2017 Defensive Back of the Year Award and qualifying for the 2017 USATF Track & Field Nationals (400 meter & Javelin)
What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
Don’t take things for granted. Be humble and thank God everyday—without Him nothing is possible.
Who is a current player (collegiate or pro) that you seek to emulate on the field?
I actually have two. Odell Beckham, Jr. is so fun to watch. I would love to train with him—his work ethic is off the charts. Also, Richard Sherman—that guy can cover anyone. I watch his DB technique and his man-to-man play. He is no joke!
What are your personal goals for this season?
Make an impact as a freshman and help my team reach the conference title game. I plan to attend summer camps including but not limited to U.S. National Team Regional Camp, Rivals Camp Series, and NU’s Chicagoland Showcase which is a premier camp in the Midwest.
Anything else you’d like fans and coaches to know about you?
I am of good character and very coachable. I want to compete against the best as well as be trained by the best. Building relationships with college coaches is just as important as finding the right school that offers great opportunities. I come from a family of D1 athletes (Father – Mike Smith, Sr., CB – Eastern Illinois University, Cousins – Jerry Henderson, RB – Northern State University, Billy Henderson, RB – University of South Florida, and Julian Haynie, DB – Illinois State University).
